Golf 2012
get the fade out of my driver and I want to hit fairway woods with confidence.  I’ve had these goals for a few years now.  But last year I didn’t really do any real work on it.  I played a lot, but didn’t really practice much, at least on those issues.  Today I took part in a group lesson with Trish, the only pro at Tilden who hasn’t worked on my fade.

There were only three of us, so I got a fair amount of attention.  She showed me a fairly fundamental thing I could put into my swing.  It was really successful, although it will probably take a while to become consistent with it.  The other recommendation was that I upgrade my clubs.  When I bought my last set five years ago, I didn’t know if golf was just a passing fancy.  It isn’t.  Goodbye starter set!
February 2, 2012

If I compare the start of 2012 to 2011, my golf has been MUCH better.  Like five strokes per round better for my first eight rounds.  Why the big improvement?

I have to be honest, the weather has been much better.  There are no swamps on the 6th and 9th and 17th holes.  This is, of course terrible for our reservoirs and upcoming utility rates, but it’s a great for my golf scores.  Yes, it’s not as good as summer golf, and neither are my scores, but I’m sure it’s helping.

At the same time, there are still some problems that I’d like to cure in 2012.  I want to
Hey, it's me relaxing with a well deserved mai tai on Bora Bora!
The Guitars of Shin
Part 13 - The Super Sonic
February 2, 2012

Last month I talked about the compromises of youth in my purchase of a less-than-quality guitar.  This month’s entry is a compromise of my adulthood.  It’s my rock and roll amp, a Fender Super Sonic.  For those into such things, it has circuitry to emulate a Vibrolux or a Bassman, two of Fender’s most popular amps.

It turned out that my quest for flexibility was my downfall.  Like most attempts at flexibility, it was adequate but not exemplary.  If I had it to do over, I’d have simply gotten two different amps and used them in tandem as circumstance dictated.   It's like my golf clubs - it fills a need but certainly much moreso than golf, guitar is no passing fancy.  I'd like an amp that reflects that.

But for now, I’m not in a hurry to change.  I do more low-volume stuff that my other amp (a Fender Acoustasonic) does just fine.
News
January was somewhat uneventful.  No travelling except my belated Christmas trip to Arcata.  Later this year I'll be joining the family for a week in the northern reaches of California near the Oregon border.  Should be LOTS of fun!  It'll be in the middle of the year.

I must start making arrangements for Hawaii if I'm going to go next month.  The issue right now is how to handle the road to Hana!

I replaced my old refrigerator.  It was 30 years old and was having trouble cranking out the cold.  Also, the other appliances were black so I went "Energy Star" and have the new one in place.  It needs a bit of leveling still, but it looks pretty cool (pun intended!)
I said last month I was going to set up "Outlook" to manage a calendar.  I did it in Excel.  Hey, it's done!  Now will I use it?

I played a church service with Jumbo Shrimp and the Prawns.  Fun, except that our final rehersal turned out to conflict with the 49ers last game in the playoffs.  In the end I relented and made the rehearsal but DAMN!  What a dilemma.  We're scheduled to play a benefit on March 31.

I'm taking on-line Spanish lessons.  It's tough but I'm doing okay.  I expect to finish the program by the end of June.  I'll keep you posted.
